What to Prioritise in Year One of Building Your Racing Brand

Everything covered so far in this series, accounts, branding, content, sponsorship, a website, can feel like a lot to take on at once, especially alongside racing. It is a lot, if you try to do it all at the same time. You don’t need to.

Get the setup right first

Start with the foundations: Facebook and Instagram business accounts, matching handles secured across every platform, parent managed account switched on where it applies. None of this takes long, but it needs to happen before anything else, because rebuilding it later, changing a handle after you’ve built a following, for example, is far harder than getting it right at the start.

Then build the habit

Once the setup is done, the priority is building the habit of the three talking-head videos every race weekend: end of practice, after qualifying, after the race. This is the content that will do the most for you, more than anything else on this list, and it’s a habit, which means it only works if you keep it up consistently rather than doing it for one race and dropping it.

Everything else follows

Sponsorship proposals, a website, bigger partnerships, all of this follows once you’ve got the rhythm and an honest voice established. Trying to build a sponsorship pitch before you’ve got consistent content behind it means you’re asking someone to back a story that doesn’t exist yet. Get the story told properly first, then go looking for people to back it.

The order, in short

Accounts and handles first. The race weekend video habit second. Sponsorship proposals, a website and bigger partnerships once that rhythm is established. Trying to do all of it at once is how most drivers end up doing none of it well, and trying to do it in the right order is how a handful of drivers end up doing all of it properly.

If you’d like an outside view on how you’re doing against all of this, our Motorsport Marketing & Media Review is a straight-talking look at your platforms, branding and sponsorship readiness, with a one-page summary of what’s working and what to fix first, from £45.

If reading through this whole series has made the scale of it clear, accounts, content, proposals, a website, sponsors, all of it running every week, our Full Digital Management retainer is built to take the lot off your plate. Website, socials, race weekend content and sponsor reporting, handled every month, from £395.

A few more worth reading: what a press release is and when to send one, the phone camera settings that make your own race weekend footage look right, and what controls how you show up when someone searches your name on Google.

Start from the beginning of this series if you’re catching up, or dip into whichever section is most relevant to where you are right now.
