There’s a moment on every shoot where someone opens their laptop, tries to transfer a file, and the whole operation grinds to a halt.
Bad signal. Slow data. A room full of videographers staring at a progress bar that’s going nowhere fast.
We’ve been there more times than we’d like to admit.
So when we reached out to SCAN Computers for a recommendation, and they came back with two Samsung T7 portable SSDs, we weren’t entirely sure what to expect. We’d never used Samsung storage before. We’d never used an external SSD at all, if we’re being honest.
Turns out, we’d been making things a lot harder than they needed to be.
The Problem We Were Actually Trying to Solve
When you’re on location with multiple videographers, file transfer is one of those things that quietly eats your day.
You’re relying on venue Wi-Fi that hasn’t been updated since 2014. Mobile data that drops the moment you actually need it. Workflows that depend on everyone being connected at the same time to the same network, which almost never happens cleanly.
The files are large. The timelines are tight. And waiting around for a transfer to complete is not a great look when a client is watching.
We needed something faster, simpler, and completely independent of whatever internet connection was, or wasn’t, available on the day.
What SCAN Recommended and Why It Made Sense
SCAN Computers have been supplying tech to professionals for years. When we asked for a recommendation for portable storage that could handle high-volume creative workflows, they pointed us straight to the Samsung T7.
Compact. Fast. No external power needed. Plug in, go.
The T7 connects via USB-C and transfers data at up to 1,050 MB/s read speed. In practical terms, that means large video files move quickly. Not “make a brew and come back” quickly. Actually quickly.
No drivers to install. No setup process to wrestle with. That last part mattered more than we expected.
The Bit That Actually Surprised Us
We assumed there’d be a catch.
New kit usually means a setup process, some compatibility issue, a driver download, or at minimum a confusing cable situation. We braced for it.
It didn’t come.
Plug in, show up on the computer, start transferring. That was it.
For a team that’s usually focused on the shoot rather than the tech, that simplicity is genuinely valuable. The last thing you want on a busy location day is to spend twenty minutes troubleshooting storage before you’ve shot a single frame.
The physical build is solid too. Not plasticky or lightweight in a worrying way. It feels like something that’ll survive a kit bag without drama.
Who This Is Actually For
If you’re a creative, a content producer, a videographer, or anyone who regularly moves large files between locations, the T7 is worth serious attention.
But there’s another angle here that doesn’t get talked about enough.
Storage on your laptop matters. Large files sitting on your machine slow everything down. Editing software lags. Export times increase. Your laptop runs hotter than it should. It’s one of those slow-burn problems that people put up with for way too long before doing anything about it.
Offloading content to an external SSD after a shoot, or working directly from one, takes the pressure off your machine and keeps things running cleanly. It’s a simple habit that makes a noticeable difference.
For small agencies, freelancers, and solo creatives running everything on one laptop, that matters.

The Motorsport Take
In motorsport, data moves fast or it doesn’t move at all.
Telemetry from a race car is useless if it takes twenty minutes to reach the engineers. Timing data that arrives late doesn’t help anybody. The performance is in the transfer, not just the collection.
Creative workflows work exactly the same way.
The footage you capture on a shoot is only as useful as your ability to move it, access it, and work with it quickly. Slow transfers, unreliable connections, and laptops struggling under the weight of large files are the creative equivalent of a car running on the wrong fuel map.
The Samsung T7 removes that bottleneck. Fast, reliable, independent of whatever network happens to be available.
Because whether you’re managing race data or managing a shoot, speed at the point of transfer changes everything.
Thanks to SCAN Computers for the recommendation and for supplying the Samsung T7 units for review.
