Every social media management tool looks brilliant for about three weeks. The demo is slick, the onboarding is friendly, the dashboard is empty and fast. Month three is when you find out what you actually bought.
We have run agency and client social through Metricool, Sprout Social and Hootsuite. Not as a one-afternoon trial either. Properly, with real client accounts and real deadlines. And we go back and re-test them, because assuming your stack is still the best one two years on is how you end up overpaying for something worse. Every time we look, we end up back on Vista Social.
Disclosure. We are a Vista Social affiliate. If you sign up through a link on this page we earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. We pay for our own account, we use it every working day for our own clients, and we would be recommending it either way.
How the four of them charge, which matters more than the feature list
Start with pricing structure rather than price, because structure is what bites you eighteen months in when the team has grown.
| Tool | How it charges | Trial | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vista Social | Per plan. Professional $79/mo includes 2 users and 15 profiles. Advanced $149/mo includes 4 users and 30 profiles. | 14 days, no card | Users are bundled into the plan |
| Sprout Social | Per seat. Essentials from $99 per seat monthly, Standard $199 per seat, Professional $299 per seat. | 30 days | Every extra person is another full seat |
| Hootsuite | Per user. Roughly $99 to $399 per user per month depending on tier. | Varies | Same per-seat problem, plus long-standing upsells |
| Metricool | Per plan, and there is a genuine free tier. Paid plans start low, around $22/mo. | Free plan available | Cheapest way in, narrower feature set |
There is the whole argument in one column. Sprout and Hootsuite charge per person. Vista Social charges per plan.
Take a four-person team that needs everyone logged in. On Sprout’s published Standard plan at $199 a seat, that is $796 a month before anyone has posted anything. Vista Social’s Advanced plan is $149 a month and includes four users and thirty profiles. They are not identical products and it is not a like-for-like feature comparison, but the shape of the two bills is completely different, and it stays different every month forever.
Metricool sits at the other end. Its free tier is a real free tier rather than a trial in disguise, and if you are one person running one brand it may well be all you need. We are not going to pretend otherwise to make a point.
Fourteen days, no card required. Long enough to schedule a real month of content.

Nobody chooses a tool on support. Everybody stays or leaves because of it.
Our experience of the big incumbents has been the standard enterprise pattern: a help centre article that does not quite answer the question, a chatbot, then a ticket, then a reply the next working day from someone who has not read the ticket.
Vista Social’s support has been the single biggest reason we stopped shopping around. Real answers from people who know the product, fast, and without the sense that you are being managed towards closing the ticket. When something has been broken, they have said so, rather than describing it as expected behaviour.
A tool you can get a straight answer out of on a Tuesday afternoon is worth more than a marginally better analytics tab.
The interface, which you will be living in daily
This is subjective and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. Here is our take.
Hootsuite has years of accumulated interface. Things are where they are for historical reasons, and getting a new starter productive in it takes longer than it should. Sprout is cleaner and clearly well designed, but it is built for a larger organisation than most of the businesses we work with, and you feel that in how much of it you never touch. Metricool is the friendliest of the three and the quickest to learn, which is exactly what you would expect from the one with the smallest surface area.
Vista Social manages to be dense without being confusing. Everything for a given client sits where you would expect it, the calendar behaves the way a calendar should, and approvals do not require a training session. We have onboarded people onto it in an afternoon.
How often they improve it, and why that adds up
This is the one that surprised us, and the one we would most want a prospective buyer to weigh properly.
New networks, new formats, new AI tools, new reporting. Vista Social updates constantly. A platform changes how it works or a new format takes off, and support for it appears within weeks rather than sitting on a public roadmap you are invited to vote on.
Compare that with waiting on an established name to add something your clients are already asking for. When a tool improves slowly you end up filling the gaps by hand, and that manual work is a cost that never appears on the invoice.
Over two or three years that difference adds up. The tool that keeps improving is a noticeably better product by the end of it. The one that does not has a new logo.
Where the others genuinely win
A comparison where one product wins every category is an advert, so here is the honest version.
Metricool
Best free tier of the four by a distance, and the easiest to pick up. If you are a sole trader with one brand, start here and ignore everything else in this article. Its reporting is also unusually good for the money.
Sprout Social
Genuinely excellent reporting and a mature approvals and permissions model. If you are a large team, or you have procurement and compliance people who need boxes ticked, Sprout answers questions the others do not. The per-seat pricing is the price of that.
Hootsuite
The longest track record and the widest integration ecosystem. If your organisation already runs on it and half your processes assume it, the cost of switching may genuinely outweigh the benefit. That is a legitimate reason to stay.
What we would change about Vista Social
It is priced in US dollars, so UK buyers carry an exchange rate and a card that occasionally decides a foreign transaction looks suspicious.
The sheer number of features means the first hour is busier than Metricool’s. It rewards a proper setup session rather than a poke around.
And it is not the cheapest option available. If price is the only criterion, Metricool’s free tier wins and this article is not for you.
Who we would actually recommend it to
One person running a lot of their own accounts
This is most of our client base, so it is the case we know best. A racing driver in 2026 is on X, Facebook, Instagram, Threads, TikTok and YouTube as a bare minimum. That is six profiles before you add a separate team page, a second Instagram, or a Facebook profile that is not the same thing as the Facebook page.
One person, six to eight profiles. That combination is priced badly almost everywhere. Sprout’s entry plan covers five social profiles. Metricool’s free tier covers one brand. So you either pay for a tier built for a marketing department you do not have, or you run six apps on your phone and post the same clip six times on a Sunday night after a race weekend.
Vista Social‘s Professional plan is $79 a month for fifteen profiles and two logins. The profile headroom matters because it stops you rationing which platforms get the content. The second login matters more than it sounds: the driver keeps their own access, and whoever actually runs the accounts, a parent, a manager, or an agency like us, works in the same place. Nobody is texting a password around.
It also means one calendar. You can see what is going out where before a race weekend rather than reconstructing it from six apps afterwards.
Agencies running multiple client accounts
The per-seat argument again. If your tool charges by the person, growing the team gets expensive faster than growing the client list, which is the wrong way round.
In-house teams of two to eight
Small enough that per-seat pricing hurts, big enough that everyone genuinely needs their own login and a proper approvals step. Anyone whose current tool is fine but slow to support the platforms their audience has already moved to.
If that sounds like you, the 14-day trial takes a card-free fortnight to answer the question properly. Schedule a real month of content in it. That is when you find out.
Frequently asked questions
Is Vista Social better than Hootsuite?
For a small agency or an in-house team, we think so, and we have used both. The biggest structural difference is pricing: Hootsuite charges per user, Vista Social bundles users into the plan. Hootsuite has a longer track record and a bigger enterprise footprint, so a large organisation with procurement requirements may still land there.
Is Metricool good enough on its own?
For one brand and one person, often yes, and its free tier is genuinely usable rather than a demo. It becomes limiting once you are running several brands, need proper approval workflows, or want a shared inbox across a team.
Why is Sprout Social so expensive?
It is priced per seat rather than per plan, so cost scales with headcount rather than with what you actually publish. It is a serious product with strong reporting, and for large teams with the budget it earns its place. For a four-person operation the seat maths gets uncomfortable quickly.
Can you schedule to all the main platforms with Vista Social?
Yes, including the ones that are usually awkward. The platform coverage is one of the reasons we stayed, and they add new networks and formats regularly rather than once a year.
I am one person with six or seven social accounts. Which plan do I need?
The Professional plan covers fifteen social profiles, so six or eight is comfortable with room to add more. It also includes two logins, which is useful if someone else helps run your accounts, because you both get proper access instead of sharing one password.
Does Vista Social have a free trial?
Fourteen days with no card required at the time of writing. Long enough to schedule a real month of content rather than click around an empty dashboard.
What do you actually use it for?
Scheduling and approvals across client accounts, the shared inbox, listening and reporting. We run this agency’s own social on it as well as client work.
The tool we kept coming back to, after genuinely trying the alternatives.
