Grants, Bursaries and Scholarships for Grassroots Racers: What’s Actually Out There

Post one in this series said plainly that there’s almost no public purse at grassroots level. That’s true, but “almost none” isn’t “none,” and it’s worth knowing exactly what the narrow exceptions actually are before you write them off or waste time chasing something you don’t qualify for.

Motorsport UK’s Inclusion Grant and bursary hub

Motorsport UK runs an Inclusion Grant programme, aimed at organisations and initiatives that widen access to the sport, alongside an Inclusion Hub carrying a dedicated scholarships and bursary page. Both are aimed squarely at improving access for under-represented groups in motorsport, not general season funding for any driver who applies. Worth checking the eligibility criteria directly on Motorsport UK’s site before assuming it applies, and worth applying if it genuinely does, because it’s real money with far less competition than a general talent scholarship.

National scholarship schemes

The British Motorsport Association and a handful of parts brands run scholarship schemes each year, usually tied to a specific championship, car class or manufacturer. These are competitive, often requiring an application, a track record of results, or both, and the numbers accepted each year are small. Worth entering if you fit the profile, not worth building a season’s budget around before you know whether you’ve been accepted.

Club-level bursaries

Some motor clubs run small bursaries of their own for junior members, usually modest amounts intended to help with entry fees or a first season’s licence rather than a full budget. These aren’t advertised nationally, so the only way to find them is to ask your own club directly, and to ask early in the year before any pot is allocated.

What this doesn’t cover

None of the above adds up to a season’s budget for most families, and that’s the honest point of this whole series. Grants and bursaries are worth applying for because they’re free money if you qualify, but they’re a supplement to the routes covered elsewhere in this series, contacts and connections, a straight ask, TopCashback and easyfundraising, not a replacement for them. Treat an hour spent checking eligibility for the schemes above as worthwhile, and don’t let the search become a reason to delay the routes that are available to everyone.
