The DJI Osmo Mobile 8: Worth It Once You’re Filming Every Weekend

A wall, a small tripod, or bracing your arm against your body will get most drivers through their first season of filming their own content. Once you’re posting every race weekend and building a real habit of it, though, the DJI Osmo Mobile 8 is the next upgrade worth making.

What it is

It’s a handheld gimbal, a motorised stabiliser your phone clips into, that keeps footage smooth even while you’re walking, gesturing or turning your head mid-sentence. It also tracks your face automatically, keeping you framed in shot without anyone needing to hold the phone steady on you or adjust it as you move.

Why it matters for race weekend content

Shaky footage is one of the fastest ways to undermine an otherwise good, honest clip. A viewer will forgive a rough edit or an unpolished setting far more readily than footage that’s genuinely hard to watch because it’s bouncing around. A gimbal removes that problem entirely, and it also frees you up to film while moving, walking back from the garage, heading to the grid, rather than needing to stop and prop your phone up every time.

What it costs

It currently runs at around £115 to £135 at UK retailers, which is a meaningful step up from the mic, so it’s worth treating as the second purchase rather than the first if you’re building this up gradually.

When to buy it

If you’re only occasionally posting, a tripod and a steady hand will do. Once the three-video race weekend habit is genuinely established and you’re filming every session, the gimbal starts paying for itself in how much more watchable and professional the footage looks, well before you’re at the stage of hiring a videographer for the polished stuff.

Buy the mic first if you’re choosing one to start with: why the DJI Mic Mini 2 is the first upgrade worth making, and the full phone camera settings guide both of these sit alongside.
